Chemical Substance Management

Approach to Chemical Substance Management

In accordance with its Basic Environmental Policy, the ROHTO Group is committed to promoting the proper management of chemical substances that may impact the environment and to reducing usage through the adoption of alternative substances. We consider it essential not only to protect the environment and local communities, but also to ensure the safety and peace of mind of our customers and employees, and thus we strictly comply with all relevant laws and regulations to enforce appropriate controls.

Furthermore, we are strengthening management throughout the entire product lifecycle—from the procurement of raw materials to production, logistics, use, and disposal. By developing and providing products that take environmental impact into careful consideration throughout this lifecycle, we aim to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.

Management of PRTR Substances

We appropriately manage chemical substances that may pose risks to human health or the ecosystem, in accordance with the PRTR (Pollutant Release and Transfer Register) system under the Act on Confirmation, etc. of Release Amounts of Specific Chemical Substances in the Environment and Promotion of Improvements to the Management Thereof. We ensure proper management when developing and producing products.

The PRTR system is a framework that enables the identification and reporting of the amounts of designated chemical substances—those potentially hazardous to human health or ecosystems—released from business sites into the environment (air, water, and soil), as well as the amounts contained in waste that are transferred off-site. We appropriately report to the relevant authorities both the quantities released into air, public water, and soil, and the quantities transferred off-site for substances whose annual handled amount exceeds the designated threshold (1 ton or more).

In Japan, our Ueno Techno Center files notifications and implements strict management in Mie Prefecture, and our Osaka Plant and Laboratory does the same in Osaka Prefecture, both in compliance with the PRTR system. We are also committed to continually improving our chemical substance management activities.

Air Pollution Prevention

We are working to reduce emissions of chemicals that lead to air pollution, such as nitrogen oxide (NOx), particulates, and volatile organic compounds (VOC), by streamlining our manufacturing processes and operating environmentally friendly facilities.
As for sulfur oxide (SOx), the emission from our plants has been zero since 2000.
In addition, we comply with laws and regulations and appropriately report to local governments.
